G

  • Gidget
    • Founded the south bay burning man region (originally called Burning Silicon, now called South Bay) with Skid (Mike Aquino) in 2001
Over a 4 year period, we built the regional community to include more than 300 active burners holding 4 events, on average, every month in years 2, 3 and 4 – one large house party, one meeting/social event, one hands-on workshop, and one weekend-long beach burn every month in addition to one larger annual event hosted at a public venue once every year. Every event was radically inclusive (open to all).
    • Monthly workshops included burn barrel making, EL wire workshops, virgin fairs, costume making, playa hair and make-up and more.
    • Monthly beach burns held at Red, White and Blue north of Santa Cruz
Typically found 200-400 attendees (depending on the time of year/weather) with all night music, bonfires, fire spinning and a variety of burner-inspired community activities held Friday to Sunday.
    • Spawned and spun out many artistic collaborations and community initiatives including Burning Silicon camp (renamed Silicon Village several years later) founded to offer an on-Playa home built on radical inclusion and radical self reliance, as well as other burning man principles
    • The Dream Quilt (2008)
Designed and created this collaborative group art project/steel sculpture, which was placed near the foot of the man.The steel patches, designed and cut by 27 different people (taught to use a plasma cutter in my garage), are stitched together and represent the connecting of individuals into a cohesive community.

The shadows, cast by the images within the patches, create a dreamy visage.Visitors can pivot and tilt the steel quilt to receive the sun and wheel the nearby bed to take the shadow. Or use the patch shadows and trace a tattoo, decorating your body to carry pieces of the dream with you throughout the playa.

    • GLotus (2009)Designed and created this steel sculpture placed near the foot of the man.GLotus combines our world – symbolized by the globe – with enlightenment – symbolized by the lotus flower.Visitors can pivot and tilt the world or the lotus flower toward the sun to view both the light and the shadow.
    • Scrabble (2009, 2010, 2011)
Designed and created this radically inclusive experience, which included hosting several workshops in my garage each summer to help participates make their letters (including teaching each person how to solder EL wire, if they wished to learn), and onplaya “games.”The game: Imagine collecting dozens of new and old friends one night on the playa… together we go out and play Scrabble. Each of us has an EL wire letter hanging in front. We mix and mingle to make words… not like traditional Scrabble… more like fun chaos
